Knowledge Library

A plain-language glossary of the terms that come up most in networking, cloud, security, and AI. Grouped by section so you can jump straight to what you need.

Networking

SD-WAN — Software-Defined WAN (Wide Area Network)
Uses software to manage network traffic across multiple business locations, replacing legacy hardware with intelligent routing to improve speed, security, and cost. It commonly substitutes MPLS with internet services such as DIA, cable, DSL, and wireless.

Product Services

SASE — Secure Access Service Edge
A cloud-based framework that combines network connectivity and security tools into a single platform, bringing together SD-WAN and SSE.
SSE — Security Service Edge
A cloud-based security framework that combines multiple security services to protect users, data, and apps, delivering identity-based access controls for web, cloud, and corporate resources across all locations.
NGFW — Next-Generation Firewall
An advanced network security device that goes beyond traditional stateful firewalls by inspecting traffic at the application layer, adding deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention, and threat intelligence.
SWG — Secure Web Gateway
A security tool that monitors and filters internet traffic to protect users from malicious websites, phishing, and malware.
CASB — Cloud Access Security Broker
A solution that sits between an organization's users and their cloud providers to enforce security policies.
DLP — Data Loss Prevention
A strategy and set of tools used to detect and prevent the unauthorized sharing, exfiltration, or loss of sensitive data.

XaaS

NaaS — Network-as-a-Service
Networking delivered as a subscription cloud service rather than owned hardware.
PaaS — Platform-as-a-Service
A cloud platform that provides the tools and environment to build, run, and manage applications.
FWaaS — Firewall-as-a-Service
Firewall capabilities delivered from the cloud as a managed service.
UCaaS — Unified Communications-as-a-Service
Cloud-delivered voice, video, messaging, and collaboration in one platform.
CCaaS — Contact Center-as-a-Service
A cloud contact-center platform for managing customer interactions across channels.

AI

LLM — Large Language Model
Massive neural networks trained on vast internet datasets to understand and generate human-like language.
GenAI — Generative AI
Models like ChatGPT or Grok that generate brand-new text, audio, or images rather than only analyzing existing data.
Agentic AI
AI that doesn't just chat but actively executes tasks, uses tools, and completes multi-step workflows.
ML — Machine Learning
A branch of AI where systems learn patterns from data to make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed.
DL — Deep Learning
A subset of machine learning that uses multi-layered neural networks to model complex patterns.
Shadow AI
The use of unapproved, unmonitored AI tools by employees in the workplace.
